China became the world's largest auto market in 2009, but its supervision of vehicle safety has not kept pace with the times.
This responsibility falls on the China National Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, a body that oversees all types of products.
Therefore, when there is a sudden major car safety hazard, such as Takata's defective airbag inflator, China has no authority responsible for it.
The AQSIQ is unable to concentrate on supervising a large number of other products. The agency's regulation of car safety seems to be mainly reflected in the release of vehicle recall information on its website.
This is not enough to protect motorists from dangerous defects, as evidenced by Takata's defective airbags.
In Japan and the United States, Honda, Toyota, Nissan and other automakers have recalled millions of cars equipped with Takata airbags. Five deaths have been linked to defective airbags, and regulators have not dealt with this matter in a low-key manner. In both countries, newspapers are flooded with headline news about Takata's security issues.
In China, by contrast, the recall information published on the AQSIQ website does not indicate that the airbags that are missing are manufactured by Takata.
For example, in August, after the domestic media reported a large number of complaints about defects in rear axle parts, the center convened a special working group to investigate the Volkswagen New Sagitar.
Last month, due to dissatisfaction with the slow progress of the investigation, a group of Volkswagen new Sagitar owners threatened to sue the agency for failing to perform its duties.
With the growth of the Chinese auto market, the endless product defects have made the center unstoppable. According to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the number of recalled vehicles has soared from 1 million in 2009 to more than 5.3 million in 2013.
To ensure the safety of China's 300 million motorists, China urgently needs a well-equipped, well-equipped security regulatory agency.
